Asamoah Gyan hit a brace but was not enough to secure Al Ain a place in the semi final of a Cup tie against Al Wahda on Friday night.
Goals from the Ghana international and teammate Mohamed Al Saedi secured an impressive 4-1 win for the UAE Pro-League leaders.
The win was however marred by ‘The Boss’ inability to progress in the competition due to Al Wasl’s thrilling victory against Al Jazira in Bani Yas.
It however took the 22nd minute for Al Ain to assert their authority on the match against the spirited Al Wahda, as Asamoah Gyan went close with two chances in as many minutes.
The first saw the 26-year-old cut in from the left before his curled effort bobbled tamely wide.
A minute later he linked up well with strike partner Mohamed Nasser, but again scuffed his shot wide.
Al Saedi however broke the deadlock after 65 minutes following a neat move orchestrated by Gyan.
Wahda responded with a penalty of their own, through left-back Mubarak after Ibraheem Alawi had been fouled.
But, it proved a false dawn as Al Saedi completed his brace with an audacious backheel late on before Gyan added to his tally of 14 goals in 14 games with a second of his own.
