The Italian City of Reggio Emelia has presented a specially equipped ambulance valued at GH¢50,000.00 to the Asante-Mampong District Hospital. The ambulance was donated to the medical facility through Ghana's former Ambassador to Italy Charles Agyei-Amoama. Handing over keys to the vehicle to the hospital's management, the ex-diplomat pledged to help the facility acquire additional equipment and logistics. Mr Agyei-Amoama is funding the construction of a Children's Ward for the hospital. Mr Agyei-Amoama, a citizen of Asante-Mampong, last year presented an ambulance and medical equipment to the Komfo-Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH). Medical Superintendent of the Asante-Mampong Hospital, Dr Emmanuel Ahiable, indicated the donation was a welcomed relief since patients in critical conditions could now be transported to KATH, a referral hospital. The Municipal Director of Health Services, Madam Rebecca Dokurugu, expressed appreciation for the donation, noting that it could significantly help to reduce maternal deaths in the area. She said due to lack of logistics, the Municipality recorded five maternal deaths in 2007 and 10 in 2008. The figure, however, reduced to three last year.
