Some residents of Ashaiman in the Greater Accra Region have hit the streets to demonstrate against government’s decision to make Adenta the capital of the new Adenta/Ashaiman Municipality. The over six hundred residents poured out onto the streets of Ashaiman on the mornig of Tuesday November 20, 2007.Reports reaching Joy News say, commercial activities in the Ashaiman township were halted as drivers and market women joined in the demonstration. The area was originally under the Tema Municipal Assembly and was elevated to a municipal status jointly with Adenta in October 2007 when government created 23 new districts and three municipal assemblies. But since the creation of the new municipal assembly, there have been disagreements over which of the two towns, Adenta and Ashaiman should have been the capital of the new municipality. The Member of Parliament for Ashaiman, Mr. Alfred Agbesi has consistently opposed the naming of Adenta as the capital, arguing that Ashaiman with its large population was more deserving of a capital. The youth of Ashaiman during their protest were asking for a municipal assembly of their own.The protestors intend to send a petition to President Kufour at the Castle.
