The flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has pledged that his government will be made up of at least 30 per cent women if voted into power in the 2020 general elections.
John Dramani Mahama at the outdooring of his running mate, Prof Jane Opoku-Agyemang on Monday said, this is crucial since women contribute immensely to the country’s development.
“The selection of Prof Jane Opoku-Agyemang as our running mate is an indication of the many bold and progressive changes the next NDC administration I will lead Isha Allah will embark upon.
“The involvement of women in the decision-making process, will not end at the level of Vice presidency. We will work again towards the attainment of a minimum of 30% of all our appointment going to women.”
According to him, changing the male-dominated governing system of Ghana will help the country bridge the gender gap in all the male-dominated sectors adding that “to have a highly educated and discipline woman placed in a critical position influences policies and shape our nation’s destiny.”
Amongst his policies for the country, if voted in power, the former President said an initiative will be implemented to aggressively reduce the maternity mortality rate in the country by 50%, which now stands at 319 per 100,000 births.
He further added that his government will ensure female economic improvement and enact a law that will protect and secure shelters for abused women and children.
Mr Mahama, said the second coming of his leadership is to change the face of politics and make it one that will not discriminate against any Ghanaian.
"As a social democratic party, we seek to harness the best quality in all our people to transform the destiny of our nation," he stated.
