Elders and some members of the Atuabo lands acquired compulsorily by government for the construction of the Gas Processing Plant in Ghana are demanding fair compensation for the acquired lands.
They say they fear restrained relationship between the community and management of Ghana Gas will make government give them little compensation.
Speaking to Joy New’s Kweku Owusu Preprah, a representative of the community Mr. James Anor Afful complained about the lack of transparency of Ghana Gas management.
“We have strained relationship with the management of the project because there is no transparency about the things they are doing and the effect on the people”.
He stressed that the community has no problem with the construction of the processing plant.
Government through an executive instrument last week declared the acquisition of the Atuabo lands by the state for the processing plant.
The acquisition and clearing of these lands caused many farmers in the community to lose their farms and other properties.
Residents said the compensations government gave them for the destruction of their crops and farmland two years ago was not fair and fear it will be repeated.
The China Development Bank (CDB) agreed to lend government of Ghana $3 billion for the construction of the Gas Processing Plant as well as other projects in the country.
Part of the money to be received will be used in compensating members of the community whose lands, farms and property were affected by the acquisition.
Chief Executive Officer of Ministry of Finance Prof. Thomas Mba Akabzaa told the judgment commission at its sitting yesterday, that payment of the compensation had delayed because the entire CDB loan had not been released.
