A member of the Government Communications team, Stephen Atubiga, who recently served a three-day prison sentence for contempt, has decided to turn his woes into a blessing through a movement to preach peace and manage expectations ahead of the Supreme Court ruling on the ongoing election petition hearings. Atubiga, a native of Binduri in the Upper East region of Ghana, has received support from the National Commission on Civic Education (NCCE) to launch the Atubiga Foundation, which is in fulfillment to a promise he made to his fellow inmates, to provide them with polytanks and other support services. He also intends to advocate for fair trials for remand Prisoners through a nationwide outreach program, yet to be rolled out. According to him, he is of the conviction that "our prisons must be equipped well enough as centers of reform", but advocates strongly that the youth should avoid acts that could land them in jail. In a Press statement issued on August 1, the Foundation under the distinguished auspices of Mr. Stephen Atubiga, and in collaboration with the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) and all peace loving people of Ghana, will on saturday 10th of August 2013, embark on a Peace march at 8am from the Obra Spot at Circle, through the principal streets of Accra and will finally converge at Efua Sutherland Children’s Park, where the Foundation will be officially launched. "Peace messages from high profile personalities, including Ministers of State, MPs, NDC, NPP, CPP, PNC, PPP representatives and other distinguished individuals will be delivered," he added. The highlight of the Peace march will be the official launch of the Foundation and the fact that participants will be dressed in their various political colours. The Foundation with NCCE will later call on Nana Akufo Addo, President John Mahama and all other political heads to join the peace campaign. Stephen Atubiga and Ken Kuranchie, Managing Editor of the Searchlight newspaper were last month sentenced to three days and ten days respectively to prison for contempt charges, by the Supreme Court presided over by His Lordship Justice William Atuguba.
