Reports reaching Adom News indicate that the Atwima Kwanwoma Senior High School at Trede near Kumasi in the Ashanti region continue to hold classes under trees. The school is located not more than fourteen (14) kilometers from the Ashanti Regional capital, Kumasi, on the Kumasi-Bekwai road. Some of the students told Adom News the school has six classrooms for all four-year groups, and every year group has separate Science, Business, Arts and Visual Arts students.A Business Teacher of the school, Mr. Kwabena Kwarteng confirmed the students’ complaints saying the student population is 300, and when the various classes have to meet separately, classroom space becomes a challenge and some of them are forced to hold their classes under the trees. He said the teachers also use the tree shades as their staff common room where they mark scripts and sometimes even hold classes.“The Parent Teacher Association has assisted the school to start a three-classroom block project, but that is not yet completed so we continue to meet under trees,” he said.Mr. Kwarteng said they do not have computers to do practice work with students in the ICT class, even though ICT is a core subject, adding that the only two computers in the school are being used by the school secretary and the headmistress for administrative work.He said the school had an old library, but that had also been converted into an administrative block and the school has only one toilet used by both students and teachers.“Our school looks like a primary school without inadequate classroom as well as teaching and learning facilities…and yet we are writing the same exams as our counterparts in the cities,” they lamented. The headmistress of the school, Madam Elizabeth Osei, was said to have done her best to raise funds to develop the school but her efforts were not enough to solve the problems of the school. She reportedly appealed to philanthropists, NGO’s and corporate Ghana to come to aid of the school and promised to name any project after the one who provides it.But Mr. Kwarteng said the headmistress has for sometime now not been coming to school because of the stress of the challenges. The students said even though the school is government-assisted, and also regulated by the Ghana Education Service (GES), the support from the government has not been forthcoming. The students said in spite of all that, their teachers do their best under the challenging conditions, adding that the lack of adequate facilities hamper the efforts of their teachers. They are therefore appealing for support from benevolent Ghanaians and organizations. The MP for Atwima Kwanwoma, Dr. Kwadwo Appiah-Kubi confirmed the challenges facing the school and said even the six classrooms is an improvement because the situation was worse. He said the school used to be owned and run by the community itself until recently when government took over the school."I personally made efforts to get government to fulfill its promises to the school but to no avail so I hope that now that Adom FM has highlighted the problems of the school they will get some support," he said.
