The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, is expected to meet the leaders of NDC and NPP caucuses in Parliament over the chaos that characterised the inauguration of the 8th Parliament.
On January 7, Ghanaians watched in dismay for hours as elected MPs displayed uncouth behaviours when the time came for the House to elect a Speaker.
After the initial shock over the NDC MPs occupying the majority side of Parliament, the House was again thrown into disarray when the legitimacy of the Assin North MP-elect, James Gyakye Quayson was called into question by Effutu MP, Alexander Afenyo Markin.
The appearance of a military team, armed to its teeth in the chamber and the decision by the Tema West MP, Carlos Ahenkorah to snatch some ballot papers led to punches being thrown, and insults hurled at each other.
While some have described the actions by the MPs as “distasteful and disgraceful”, others have called for investigations and subsequent sanctions to be meted out to any MP found culpable.
Already, the Christian Council of Ghana has called on the leadership of Parliament to render a wholehearted apology to the citizenry and ensure that such misconduct does not repeat itself.
The Council argues that the behaviour by the MPs did not create a good picture for Ghana, a country widely known across the globe as a beacon of democracy.
Meanwhile, Parliament has expressed regret over the incident.
A statement issued by Madam Kate Addo, Director of Public Affairs of Parliament, explained that Parliament would, also like to put those incidents behind it and work towards a more focused and unified membership aimed at promoting the best of parliamentary practices and good governance.
