Residents of Millennium City near Nyanyano Kakraba, a suburb of Kasoa, are angry and frightened at the activities of a pastor whom they say has filled the community with mentally ill patients. Prophet Frimpong Manso, the lead pastor of the Jesus Calls Prayer Ministry and the man at the centre of the controversy, has told myjoyonline.com that he is touched by the predicament patients, hence his decision to cure them. He therefore picks them up from the streets, on refuse dumps and from any where they could be found with the sole intention of curing them of their ailment. However, the conditions under which these patients are kept can best be described as appalling. Deplorable Conditions The Church operates from under a shed and is located in a residential area. The patients are mostly seen on the compound; some sitting on the ground, others loitering about, usually moving from one house to the other demanding food and other items in order to survive. Patients who are wild and presumed to be destructive are put in chains and bound to trees on the compound. A resident who is visibly disgusted by the situation confirmed to myjoyonline.com that some patients could be chained for weeks or even months irrespective of the weather condition – It was clear that the chained had to even ease themselves right where they were as they are rendered immobile. Some residents also accuse the pastor of dumping dead patients at unknown places – a charge the Prophet vehemently denies. Risks and Fears of Residents Residents say the patients sometimes threaten them, sleep on their compounds and knock on their doors at night. Some residents also claim that some patients steal their belongings such as cooking utensils, clothing - especially when hanged on a dry line. Pastor’s Defense Prophet Frimpong-Manso insists the accusations are untrue. He claims the patients are well catered for – he baths, clothes, feeds and heals them with no assistance. On the accusation of dumping bodies of dead patients at unknown places, the man of God explained that only one patient has died since the establishment of the church two years ago. He said he called the person’s family and informed them of the death and subsequently met with the family at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital and handed the body to them. Irritated by the accusations, Prophet Frimpong-Manso stated that he had endured stiff opposition from residents for far too long, maintaining that enough was enough. He attributed their hostility towards his ‘good works’ as borne out of jealousy, stressing that his deeds are backed by God’s spirit. “Woye kristoni a, ese se wo hwe se obi die beye yie,” to wit, a Christian must not only be concerned about his own welfare but that of others.
