Deputy minority leader and MP for Bimbilla, Dominic Nitiwul has called for immediate investigations into a clash in the area which left four dead and nine others injured.

“The government should be able to give us intelligence on the ground and say we believe this will happen, this will not happen. Sometimes you are taken by surprise, but you shouldn’t be taken by surprise too often. I don’t think that is fair to the people”, he told Joy News.

There was sporadic shooting in Bimbilla in the Northern Region yesterday after some butchers allegedly refused to present a portion of their meat to the chief in the area as demanded by tradition.

This sparked the clashes between the butchers and another faction suspected to be supporting the chief.

The town has been under curfew since the death of the Bimbilla Naa (Chief) in June last year.

According to Mr. Nitiwul a better solution to the recurrent clashes would be to provide better security for the people of the area rather than the resort to curfews.

“I don’t think that [curfew] is fair on the people. I think immediately government must tighten security in the area. It is not about curfew. You can put curfew 24 hours but if you don’t provide protection to the people. If they people don’t think that they can run to you and get justice, people would want to take justice in their own hands”, he said.

The police has since tightened security in the area following the attacks.

ASP Ebenezer Tetteh, Northern Region Police PRO, told Joy News eight people have since been picked up in connection with the shooting.
