The Bole-Bamboi MP, Yussif Sulemana has asked Parliament to hold fresh elections for the approval of President Akufo-Addo's ministerial nominees.

The six nominees were approved on Friday March 24 after a rancorous process in the House deep into the evening.

The outcome was shocking as contrary to directives from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), some Members of Parliament (MPs) on the ticket of the party voted in favour of the nominees.

Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday, Mr. Sulemana suggested that the election held on Friday be cancelled.

“Second Deputy Speaker, but the result can be cancelled so that we conduct an election that can be secret which will give the results that we want," he said.

His request follows a push by Majority MPs for their colleagues in the NDC to be sanctioned for violating the standing orders governing a secret ballot. This is because it emerged that many NDC MPs took photos and videos during the secret ballot to approve the ministerial nominees.

The second Deputy Speaker, Andrew Amoako Esiamah said the NDC MPs' conduct is an affront to Parliament.

According to the Fomena MP, since it is a secret ballot, the MPs were supposed to set good examples in the process.

“The Standing Orders 110 B, the election was supposed to be held in secret. Mr Speaker, the election was indeed being held in secret but subsequently, we have read in some of our social platforms that some of our members probably as a matter of proving a point...videoed or took pictures of the way they voted … it is an affront to the election,” he said.

Other NPP MPs asked for sanctions against the culpable MPs.

The Sefwi-Wiawso MP, Dr Kwaku Afriyie suggested that the errant MPs be dragged before the Privileges Committee.

“They have brought the name of this august House into disrepute. Mr Speaker, I call on you to refer it to the Privileges Committee so that it is investigated for our good name to be exonerated,” he said.
