Former World Boxing Organization(WBO)Bantamweight champion Alfred ‘Cobra’ Kotey has exclusively told Joy Sports he has three more years to remain in the sport before finally hanging his gloves at 46years.The boxer who is now 43-year old will be in action on Saturday at the El-Wak Stadium where he will face Frederick Lawson who is undefeated in 15 fights in a welterweight contest.“People will say I am old but I and still very strong and I am not scared of any boxer in Ghana. I want to prove a point to Ghanaians before I retire from boxing. I am still very strong and I hope to be around for at least three years before finally quitting,” Kotey told Joy Sports.The 43 year old, has not fought regularly since 1997 when he lost to Juan Manuel Marquez in the US and has taken a three to two year breaks for various reasons. Kotey’s decision to make a return could bring reminisce of his amateur team mate Ike Bazooka Quartey’s historic return in 2005 which got him the ‘Comeback boxer of the year’ award by the world renowned Ring Magazine.
Alfred Kotey now has a record of 26 wins 15 losses and a draw.
He also admitted that money was one of the motivations for continuing in the ring.The Alfred Kotey-Frederick Lawson bout is an undercard on the Golden Mike Pomotion which will have and international middleweight contest between Joshua Okine of Ghana and Rafael Sosa Pintos of Uruguay.Also on the bill, Samuel Amoako fights Ramon Esperanza of Paraguay in a lightweight contest. Former Commonwealth Champion, Obodai Sai will face hard-punching Ishmael Tetteh over 10 rounds.Ishmael Aryeetey and Odarlai Lamptey will slug it out in a featherweight contest while Isaac Owusu and Emanuel Quartey fight for the national featherweight title
