Zlatan Ibrahimovic has suggested he doesn't care about the Ballon d'Or after scoring yet another Champions League goal in Paris Saint-Germain's 2-1 win overOlympiacos.
The charismatic Swede—who is widely expected to finish below Cristiano Ronaldo, Franck Ribery and Lionel Messi in the chase for football's individual award—hints the trophy isn't a true indicator of talent, as reported by Graeme Yorke of the Daily Mail:
"I don't need the Ballon d'Or to know that I'm the best," said Ibrahimovic.
He also went on to claim the recognition of FIFA matters "more to some people" in comments that demonstrate he isn't going to lose sleep over a potential failure to be named the world's greatest player.
Ibrahimovic took just seven minutes to open the scoring against Olympiacos, as noted in WhoScored's match report.
The 32-year-old tapped home from close range as Gregory van der Wiel provided the cross that would allow his teammate to match the record for Champions League group stage goals on a total of eight, per Yorke's report.
Ibrahimovic has scored some stunning strikes across the past year and continues to excel in a PSG team that captured last year's Ligue 1 title.
His recent backheel goal against Bastia is indicative of a player who can score special goals at any moment, a notion galvanised after his memorable quartet of successes inPSG's 5-0 demolition of Anderlecht.
Unfortunately for the divisive Swede, he isn't destined to represent his country at the 2014 World Cup
While the media billed Sweden's playoff showdown against Portugal as "Ronaldo vs.Ibrahimovic," it was the Real Madrid star who took the plaudits with four goals across both legs, including a hat-trick in the second match.
Ibrahimovic still managed to show his quality and momentarily provided Erik Hamren's side with hope. However, his two goals in the second leg—including an excellent free-kick—were not enough as Paulo Bento's team advanced to Brazil.
The Ballon d'Or winner will be announced on Jan. 13, 2014. Expect the player to extend his reputation as both an egotistic maniac and terrific goalscorer by then.
