A police constable on Thursday put his life on the line, confronted three gunmen and foiled their attempt to rob a jewellery shop at Adabraka. In a display of athletic prowess on a hot afternoon, the constable gave one of the gun-wielding attackers, later identified as a 27-year-old Liberian, a hot chase on foot through one of the busiest streets in Accra as pedestrians and street hawkers ran helter-skelter. The policeman's heroism paid off when he caught up with the suspect on the Graphic Road, after a chase of about 300 metres. According to the Graphic, it all began when the three gun-wielding young men entered the City Jewellery Shop on the Kojo Thompson Road and held the shop owner, attendants and customers hostage at gunpoint and ordered all of them to go on their knees. Later, the robbers discovered that the closet in the shop was empty. They then turned their anger on the shop owner. When Hikmad Al Mahmoud, shop owner could no longer bear the sound of warning shots, he damned the consequences and started shouting, which attracted the attention of many passers-by from the busy street in front of the shop. Sensing danger at the sight of many people coming to the rescue of their hostages, the three armed men fled into their waiting taxi, with registration number GS 4329 Y and side marking of T 044 AMA, but after a few metres they abandoned their cab and seized a Peugeot saloon car, with registration number GY 1996 Y and belonging to MTN. On seeing the fleeing suspects, the policeman, who was then buying food nearby, gave them a hot chase, with the help of other bystanders, until he caught up with the Liberian, while the other two, suspected to be Nigerians, managed to escaped. The suspect gave his name as Sampson Aloyouns. When the Daily Graphic arrived at the crime scene, the taxi cab which was used for the operation was parked in front of the jewellery shop. According to Mr Emmanuel Adjaho, who helped in the arrest of the alleged robber, the pursuers had caught up with the robbers in traffic around the Central Police Station. The Accra Regional Crime Officer, Chief Supt. Boi-Bi-Boi, who confirmed the incident to the Daily Graphic, said when the suspect was arrested, the police found an MTN identity card, an MTN baseball and a locally manufactured pistol on him.
