Breast Care International, a non-governmental organization focused on breast cancer has taken its campaign to second cycle institutions.
The campaign which is in collaboration with global haulage, DHL is aimed at educating young girls on the effects of breast cancer.
The event which is the second in the series was held at the Osu Presbyterian Senior High School in Accra.
About 90 girls were screened, out of which 55, had breast masses and other breast conditions. Those with problems in their breasts were immediately counseled and referred for further checks and management.
Speaking at the event, President of Breast Care International, Dr. Beatrice Wiafe Addai said the decision to target the second cycle institutions is because breast cancer is becoming prevalent among the youth.
“When we target the young, we run the prospect of having a breast cancer- conscious population in the foreseeable future to make the campaign less tedious, while reducing the financial burden of fighting the disease on women, most of whom are within the margins of poverty” she stated.
The breast cancer advocate who is also the Chief Executive Officer of the Peace and Love Hospitals urged the female students to examine their breasts regularly for early detection.
She cautioned the students against stigmatization and advised them to disabuse their minds of the wrongly held notion that, breast cancer is caused by witchcraft.
The CEO of Peace and Love Hospitals underscored the need for the students to inform their parents of any changes in their breasts adding that, early detection could always save lives.
Dr. Beatrice Wiafe Addai commended DHL Global Forwarding for the immeasurable support, assuring the campaign will be sustained to develop a generation, conscious and determined to reduce the incidence, mortality and morbidity of the disease to the barest minimum.
