Victims of Saturday’s floods in Bunkprugu and East Mamprusi districts in the Northern Region are appealing to government and benevolent organisations to come to their aid.About 700 houses are said to have been submerged in flood waters while several farmlands have been destroyed. One person has so far been confirmed dead and more than 6,000 displaced. The displaced are currently taking shelter in classrooms and market centres.Member of Parliament for the area, Solomon Namliit Boar, described the situation as unfortunate.Joy News' Northern regional Correspondent, Hashmin Mohammed, who visited the affected areas reports that the displaced persons are still helpless.District Coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Yuni Sugri, told Joy News he is yet to receive a response to a request he sent to the regional office for immediate assistance."According to them [regional office], they are organising", he said.He said he has sent in a request for tents, mattresses and drugs - as there could be an outbreak of disease - but he has not heard anything positive from the regional office. The rains are the second this year. Last April similar floods displaced thousands, although last Saturday's is said to be the most severe.Fears of outbreak of diseaseFlood victims also fear there could be an outbreak of diseases as the floods have deprived them of appropriate places of convenience.People are said to be defecating in open places.Residents of the two affected districts say the practice could soon pollute their sources of water.Meanwhile, checks at the Interior Ministry indicate officials are yet to receive any formal communication on the floods in the Northern Region.
