The Confederation of African Football (CAF) on Monday announced Gambia’s disqualification from the U-20 African Youth Championship (AYC) qualifiers for the 19th edition of the competition.
A statement on CAF website indicated that the decision was taken by the Organising Committee for the Orange Africa U-20 Championship.
“The decision follows a protest by Liberia on some players of Gambia during the first leg on Sunday, April 6, 2014, which Gambia won 1-0.
“Indeed, Sampierre Mendy, Buba Sanneh, Bubacarr Trawally, Saloum Fall and Ali Sowe, were all born in 1994 and are not qualified to participate in the competition.
“This is because it is reserved for players born on or after 1 January 1995, as stated in a circular dated Sept. 2, 2013, sent to all Member Associations of CAF.
“In view of this, Match Number 22 (second leg) Gambia vs Liberia, scheduled between April 25 and April 27, is cancelled, and Liberia has qualified for the next round of the qualifiers,” the statement added.
The 19th edition of the competition, is scheduled for Senegal from March 8 to 22, 2015
