I am not exactly a fan of Adam Kwarasey; and I am not his critic either. I have all along adopted a wait and see attitude trying hard to give coach Goran Stevanovic the benefit of the doubt.I was present at the press conference when Goran named his final 25 man team for the Nations Cup and the one question that lingered on my mind was why Richard Kingson and more importantly Sammy Adjei were not included in the squad.I thought for a competition as tense as the Nations Cup needed a more experienced pair of hands. Somehow, Plavi thought otherwise. Kwarasey’s performance in the friendly against Brazil and the final qualifier for him was enough justification to overlook our two most dependable goal keepers in the last decade. I was ready to go along with him.Ghana is through to the quarter final and are up against Tunisia on Sunday but obviously all is not well with the Stars.As the Stars assembled to say a prayer after the uninspiring last group game against Guinea, one of them said “10 against 11 mpo y3n huano” to wit, even 10 against 11 we struggled.And that is true. That comment alone exemplifies the afflictions of a team touted as favourites.Whilst one may agree that the team as a whole has not jelled, our major source of worry has been goal keeping thus far. Three times in the game against Mali, Kwarasey misjudged, mistimed and fluffed his lines. Luckily, we were spared. And he admitted making mistakes after the game. That was a brave concession I said, knowing he had learnt his lessons and will come clean in the game against Guinea.But in that game too, Kwarasey had a lot to answer for, even though he pulled some brave saves as well. Through his indecision he gave away what I thought was a legitimate penalty in the second half by cluttering in on Camara but luckily we were spared. Then the aerial balls again. He was as clumsy and indecisive. That stunning equalizer from Camara may not largely be blamed on Kwarasey but surely he could have done better if his reflexes were right.Even after another jerky performance I was still ready to give him the benefit of the doubt because frankly, he is all we have until I read about him smelling rats, courtesy Maurice Quansah, one of Ghana’s celebrated sports journalists with the Graphic Sports.It is time to tell Adam Kwarasey that he was asked to man the posts and prevent goals, not to smell rats. If he starts smelling rats at this crucial stage of the competition then we are in big trouble. Who knows what he will be smelling after the match against Tunisia?When Kingson crudely took over from Sammy Adjei, he had the choice to start smelling rats or live up to expectation. He led Ghana gallantly to two World Cups and a couple Nations Cup tournaments until he fell out of favour with Goran Stevanovic.So can somebody tell the Norway based goal keeper that Ghanaians are not in the mood to buy into his absurd and phantom suggestions. If he fails, the team will fail and Ghanaians will be crestfallen and surely the axe must fall heavily on the man who against all odds decided to throw him into the throes of Nations Cup battle when he is unprepared and clearly could have deputized for a more experienced goal keeper.I sincerely hope it will not come to that. My belief in the Black Stars remains impervious but Kwarasey needs to be psyched up and woken up from his trance.
