A 50-year-old car dealer has been granted bail by an Accra Circuit Court over an alleged GH¢600,000 vehicle fraud.
Yakubu Seidu, charged with defrauding by false pretences, is alleged to have collected GH¢600,000 from the complainant in 2023 under the pretext of selling him a 2015 Toyota Land Cruiser. He pleaded not guilty.
The court, presided over by Evelyn Asamoah, admitted Seidu to bail in the sum of GH¢600,000 with four sureties, two of whom must be justified with movable or immovable property. The case was adjourned to December 9, 2025.
Chief Inspector Clemence Takyi, prosecuting, told the court that the complainant, Augustine Amankwah, a businessman residing at Manso-Atwere, Ashanti Region, was introduced to Seidu, a resident of Gbawe-Gonse, Accra, as a car dealer.
In 2023, Mr Amankwah expressed interest in purchasing a Toyota Land Cruiser. Seidu allegedly offered to sell him a 2015 model and showed him pictures of the vehicle. They agreed on a price of GH¢800,000.
Prosecution said Seidu handed over the vehicle to the complainant’s associate, Owusu, who delivered it to Mr Amankwah in Kumasi. Upon inspection, the complainant discovered the vehicle was a 2009 model.
Mr Amankwah reportedly confronted Seidu, who agreed to replace the vehicle. However, after returning it, Seidu failed to provide a replacement.
The complainant then requested a refund, but Seidu allegedly failed to honour the demand despite several attempts. A report was subsequently lodged with the Police, leading to Seidu’s arrest on August 23, 2024.
During investigations, Seidu requested three months to refund the money and has since paid GH¢120,000.
