The Executive Director of the Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), Prof. Gyimah Boadi is disappointed at the conduct of supporters of the NDC and NPP. He said the demonstration and counter demonstration by the supporters of the two parties was regrettable. NDC supporters besieged the premises of the Electoral Commission on Tuesday calling on the EC to declare the result of the presidential run-off. There was a stand-off between the supporters and the security agencies for hours on end till the EC Chairman, Dr. Afari-Gyan announced the result. On Wednesday, supporters of the NPP also trooped to the offices of the commission, calling on the EC to nullify results from the Volta Region or stop the re-run of the election in the Tain Constituency. Dr. Afari-Gyan said the results of the election was so close that the results of Tain constituency was needed for the eventual winner to be declared. The Tain constituency could not hold its runoff election due to circumstances the EC said was beyond its control. Prof. Boadi said he was particularly disappointed in the conduct of the NPP supporters. “The ruling party has a primary responsibility to promote orderly conduct, to promote the peace and there is absolutely no reason why supporters of a party that claims to be democratic to be acting in this manner in reaction a properly conducted election.” The CDD boss called on the government to exercise its responsibility and stop the demonstrations. He said undue pressure brought to bear on the EC by the two parties was regrettable. “The conduct of the two political parties and their supporters while waiting for the EC to announce the official results has been disappointing. It has been disappointing in the manner in which the EC was unduly and unfairly harassed first by NDC supporters and even more disappointingly now by NPP supporters.” Prof. Boadi also called on the leadership of the parties to call on their supporters to desist from “actions that amount to disorder, actions that interrupt the peace, and actions that tarnish the image of Ghana and the democratic credentials that we have been gradually accumulating.” Story by Malik Abass Daabu
