Bank of Ghana Governor, Dr Johnson Asiama, has urged Ghanaians to see the protection and stability of the cedi as a collective responsibility, stressing that no single institution can safeguard the currency alone.
He made the call at the Cedi @ 60 Conference in Accra, where policymakers, economists and industry leaders gathered to reflect on six decades of the national currency.
Dr Asiama encouraged participants to fully engage in the discussions, describing the future of the cedi as a shared national project.
“Protecting the cedi is not the task of any one institution. It is a shared endeavour rooted in our belief in Ghana’s future,” he said, emphasising the need for unity and common purpose in strengthening the currency.
He explained that the cedi’s stability is tied not only to macroeconomic policies but also to everyday confidence shown by citizens.
According to him, every Ghanaian — from schoolchildren learning to count to traders and entrepreneurs powering local commerce — has a role to play in supporting the currency.
The Governor expressed optimism about Ghana’s economic prospects, noting that the next 60 years present an opportunity to reimagine the cedi and build a stronger financial system.
He urged stakeholders to contribute ideas that will shape a resilient monetary future.
Dr Asiama also thanked participants for their commitment and called for a renewed sense of pride in the national currency.
His remarks set the tone for the conference, which forms part of broader discussions around inflation control, exchange rate stability and long-term economic reforms.
