The Central Regional branch of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) has also announced its decision to go on strike effective Wednesday in support of the bargaining committee of their mother association.
Their demands are not different from that of the Greater Accra branch. It said it has waited too long for the payment of their arrears of which the government has promised to pay only two months.
It added that government’s decision to use four calendar years to settle their 19 months arrears is unachievable. It said it appears the government is not approaching this issue with all the seriousness it deserves.
The president of the Cape Coast branch of NAGRAT, Bright Bedzrah, said all their outstanding arrears must be paid by the end of 2011.
He said, “NAGRAT Central region is saying this money should be paid within 2011 latest by December.
“Anything short of that we are calling on our members to go on strike so that the government would see that something is burning.
“What we are doing today does not mean we are interested in striking but we just want to show the government and stakeholders that paying us only 19 months arrears for four months is unattainable and teachers in the nation would never accept it.”
“We are therefore calling on our members in every corner to lay down their tools right after this conference until further notice,” he added.
“They should also not listen to any other person but wait for instructions from regional executives or instructions from headquarters.”
