The Customs Excise and Preventive Service (CEPS) is warning importers who smuggle vehicles into the country under the pretext of temporal vehicle importation or transit to desist from the act or risk losing their cars.
Speaking to the media after showcasing some of the cars, Chief Revenue Officer Robert Mensah said their tracking system has over the last two months impounded 31 luxury vehicles which are not legally registered to be in the country.
“Vehicles and goods come in the name of transit, by international convention they are passing through Ghana without necessarily paying duty, but some come and simply will not so do so and will turn them for home consumption.”
Some, he explained, even come under the pretext of religious programmes but fail to return under the stipulated 90-day period, he said.
Mr. Mensah also warned buyers to do due diligence before purchasing a vehicle to avoid embarrassment.
