The Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) has scheduled a meeting with the leadership of the Colleges of Education Teachers Association Ghana (CETAG) for Monday, August 19.

The meeting, which is expected to take place at the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations, is to address concerns made by members of CETAG so they can return to the classrooms.

Earlier, the National President of CETAG, Prince Obeng-Himah had indicated that leadership will be meeting on Monday to vote on whether to continue the strike or suspend same.

He explained that the development followed a meeting between CETAG and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia on August 16.

“Since there was no consensus today to suspend the strike, council members will have to meet with their constituents over the weekend so that we can vote on it on Monday.

“Each council member shall vote to decide whether or not the strike should be suspended based on the assurances given by the Vice President’s Office yesterday at the Jubilee House.

“The outcome shall be communicated by close of day on Monday,” he explained.

However, in a letter dated August 14 and sighted by JoyNews, the FWSC invited some key stakeholders to the August 19 meeting, including the President of CETAG, the Director-General of GTEC, the President of the Conference of Principals of Colleges of Education (PRINCOF), the Director of Tertiary at the Ministry of Education, and the Head of the Public Financial Management Unit (CPMU) at the Ministry of Finance.

Background

On June 14, teachers in the 46 colleges of  education laid down their tools, demanding better working conditions and remuneration packages.

This action was a response to the government’s delay in implementing the National Labour Commission’s (NLC) Arbitral Award Orders and negotiated service conditions.

CETAG's demands include the payment of one month’s salary to each member for additional duties performed in 2022, and the application of agreed rates of allowances payable to public universities to deserving CETAG members.
