Cherryfield Montessori School in Pokuase has won the 2021 Ga West Basic Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (BSTEM) Quiz competition.

The school beat its closest contender, St. Joseph Basic School to win the coveted BSTEM Quiz Competition trophy.

BSTEM was launched for basic schools within Ga West Municipality with a call on students to adequately prepare for excellence in the foremost competitive academic battle.

The event was launched two months ago had 77 public schools and five private schools in the competition.

The grand finale involved four schools namely St. Joseph R/C Basic School, Nsakina M/A Basic School, St. Sylvanus R/C Basic and Cherryfield Montessori School; the only private school left in the competition.

Cherryfield Montessori School scored 67 marks to lift the trophy. Its closest contender St. Joseph R/C Basic School managed to garner 50.5 marks to occupy the second position, followed by Nsakina M/A Basic School polling 39 points to take over the third position with St. Sylvanus R/C Basic scoring 34.5 marks in fourth position.

Prizes and scholarships were awarded to the winners while others were granted unique opportunities to tour places of their interest.

Speaking at the event, the Ga West Municipal Director of Education, Rev. Peter Atta Bilson stated that the agenda is to “whip up interests of students within the municipality to pay much attention to Science, Mathematics and ICT to intensify invention, innovation and optimize resources for the benefits of the citizenry whilst performing better in the subjects. ICT, Science and Mathematics makes students employable."

He also added that the competition will be organised annually to inculcate learning of the subjects in the students.

The CEO of Cherryfield Montessori School, Madam Magdalene Dzifa Adzanu, who was excited admitted that her school winning the competition will boost the morale of the students, adding that "they can achieve anything they are focused on.”

Madam Magdalene Dzifa Adzanu also added that the sleepless nights of the teachers and students did not go in vain due to the school's win.

She pointed out that a total scale up in STEM education will create an enabling environment for Ghanaian students pursue engineering, invent, innovate and optimise Ghana’s natural resources for the benefits of the citizenry whilst creating solutions for emerging problems in the world markets.

She, therefore, called on the Minister of Education to take urgent steps to adopt, upgrade and make the Ga West Municipal BSTEM Quiz Competition a national event equal to the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) competition.
