The 76-year-old chief, Nana Krofa III, was arrested about 4:00.p.m, on Tuesday, in his house by a team of policemen.
The chief’s arrest followed police intelligence report that revealed that he had taken a number of galamsey operators to the village to carry out illegal mining in the area and its environs.
The Eastern Regional Police Commander, ACP K. Gyamerah-Yeboah, who made this known to the Daily Graphic, said at the time of filing this report, the police were taking the chief to the Eastern Regional Police Headquarters at Koforidua for interrogation.
He said that the arrest of Nana Krofa followed a tip off that the chief had facilitated illegal mining in the village and its environs.
ACP Gyamerah-Yeboah said when a team of armed policemen were dispatched to the area; they were informed that Nana Krofa was the one who brought the illegal miners to the area to carry out the mining operations.
He said that after the chief’s arrest, the police met with the youth of the town, who had threatened to take the law into their own hands by attacking illegal miners in the area.
The Police Regional Commander appealed to them to exercise restraint while the police carried out investigations into the alleged report of the chief’s involvement in illegal mining.
