A protracted chieftaincy dispute at Aketekyi, near Princess Town in the Ahanta West District in the Western Region, turned violent Wednesday, leading to the death of two persons, including a sub-chief.About 30 houses were also set on fire in the confusion. The deceased are Nana Tabi Tiaka, a sub-chief installed at Aketekyi by Nana Kundumua IV, one of the two feuding chiefs at Princess Town, and one John Yankey.Followers of Nana Poli Ade, a sub-chief who was installed at Aketekyi by Nana Kundumua V, the other rival chief at Princess Town, have fled the town.The two chiefs involved in the dispute at Princess Town have installed their respectivesub-chiefs at Aketekyi and anytime there is a chieftaincy problem at Princess Town, there is a spillover to Aketekyi.People, including children, were seen fleeing the town when the Ahanta West District Security Committee (DISEC), led by the District Chief Executive, Mr Kwesi Biney, went there to assess the situation. Some of the people who had fled the town were seen standing helplessly on the junction of Princess Town.Members of DISEC and reporters of the Daily Graphic were advised on the outskirts of Aketekyi by some security personnel who had earlier been detailed to the area that it was not safe to enter the town since the situation was still tense and volatile.A fire engine which the Ghana National Fire Service deployed to Aketekyi to put out the fire set to the buildings could not enter the town because all access roads to the town had been blocked.According to Mr Biney, as a result of the chieftaincy dispute in the area, DISEC had put on hold the celebration of Kundum festival in the two towns.He explained that on Sunday, when the hostilities started, one of the disputing chiefs at Princess Town wanted to celebrate, the Kundum festival and when he was asked to stop, the chief explained that it was a durbar to welcome his visitors.He said it was alleged that dynamite was thrown into the crowd and that one man was severely beaten and was prevented from going to seek medical attention by followers of the other rival chief. Mr Biney explained that the police who were sent there to maintain law and order assisted the victim to seek medical attention.He said the hostilities continued until Monday and Tuesday when it spilled over to Aketekyi when John Yankey was shot dead, while the rival sub-chief, Nana Tabi Tiaka, was killed yesterday morning.The bodies have been deposited at the Effia Nkwanta Hospital in Sekondi and Nana Dekyi Hema Hospital at Dixcove.Source: Daily Graphic
