The Mayor of Kumasi, Richard Ofori-Agyemang Boadi, has directed traders and other operators occupying the Asokwa Interchange to Ahodwo Roundabout stretch to vacate the area by January 4, 2026, or face compulsory removal.
The order forms part of preparations to dualise the Ahodwo–Asokwa Interchange section of the Southern Bypass, a vital route that connects Kumasi to several parts of the Ashanti Region.
Authorities say the current single carriageway has become a major source of traffic congestion, especially during peak periods.
Officials from the Department of Urban Roads have expressed concern that trading activities and other obstructions along the corridor could slow down construction works if left unaddressed.
During an inspection of the site, the Mayor met with affected traders and operators to formally notify them of the directive and encourage voluntary relocation ahead of the deadline.
He cautioned that the project has already commenced and must proceed without delays, stressing that enforcement measures would be applied to anyone who ignores the notice.
“The contractor has begun work, and we expect swift progress within the stipulated timeline. There should be no obstacles, which is why those operating here must move,” he said.
