Power cuts in parts of Accra have left businesses struggling to survive and residents counting heavy losses, with affected consumers calling for immediate intervention to restore a stable electricity supply.Business owners and residents in areas such as Achimota, Tantra Hills and Mile 7 say persistent power outages and fluctuations over the past few days have disrupted operations and damaged equipment, threatening their livelihoods and daily activities. The development has raised fresh concerns about electricity stability in the capital and its impact on small businesses.Speaking to JoyNews on Monday, February 23, Rahinatu Tahiru, who manages a washing bay in the central part of Tantra Hills, said her business has been severely affected by the erratic power supply.“Three days ago, the power went off here, and whenever that happens, we are unable to work,” she said. “The workers also need money to buy food, but the electricity keeps flickering. Yesterday, one of our machines got damaged because of a power problem. We need immediate intervention.”According to her, the business had been operating smoothly until the recent disruptions began, but the frequent outages have now plunged operations into difficulty, affecting productivity and income.Just across the road, a barber shop is facing similar challenges. Its owner, Prince Osei, said the persistent outages over the past week have significantly reduced his earnings.“The thing has been going on for like one week now,” he explained. “When the light goes off in the morning, it comes around 5:00 pm. By that time, all the customers are gone, so business goes down and you don’t get much money at the end of the day.”Residents in the affected communities also say the unstable power supply is disrupting daily life and leading to financial losses. One resident said the continuous power fluctuations forced them to switch off electrical appliances to avoid damage, but food items had already gone bad.“When I realised the power was flickering, I decided to switch off my fridge and TV set, but the items in the fridge had already spoiled,” the resident said. “For three days now, our meat, chicken and goat have all gone bad, and it has really cost us.”The residents are therefore appealing to authorities and the Electricity Company of Ghana to urgently address the situation and stabilise power supply in the affected areas.Power supply challenges remain a critical national issue in Ghana, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises that depend heavily on electricity to operate. For entrepreneurs like Rahinatu Tahiru and Prince Osei, stable power is not merely a convenience but the lifeline of their businesses.
