The Tema motorway requires a heavy deployment of police to curb the recent spate of accidents on the road, the Ghana Road Safety Commission has recommended.
Over the past week the commission has recorded at least five major motor accidents on the way, most of them fatal, raising concerns about speeding and unnecessary overtaking.
The commission has attributed the trend, partly, to a blatant disregard for road safety regulations by drivers who ply the road.
Noble Appiah, Executive Secretary of Ghana Road Safety Commission said a strict enforcement of road safety regulations would help mitigate the problem.
He bemoaned the attitude of some drivers doing as much as 150kph even when the road was wet and slippery.
Mr Appiah said immediate steps must be taken to close all illegal adjoining roads to the motorway.
He said leaving unlawful activities unchecked on the road would defeat the purpose of its construction.
The Tema Motorway was constructed in as a special facility to link the Tema Port to the capital city to facilitate the transport of goods at a time when both the Tema and Accra cities were completely different settlements.
The situation seems to have changed now as the number of persons who live in both cities keep rising by the day.
