A committee established by the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, to investigate the recent assault case at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge Hospital) has found no medical evidence to support claims that rotation nurse Rejoice Tsotsoo Bortei suffered a shoulder dislocation during the incident.
Presenting its report to the Minister on Wednesday, the committee revealed that the nurse reported her injuries a day after the alleged assault on 18th August.
Medical records, however, showed no signs of a fracture in her left wrist or a dislocation in her right shoulder joint.
According to the findings, Ms Bortei received treatment, was prescribed pain relief medication, advised to take bed rest, and placed under psychological support care.
The report stated: “There was no evidence of fracture on her left wrist or dislocation of her right shoulder joint as documented by the medical records. She has, however, been treated, recommended for bed rest, and placed under psychological support care.”
The outcome directly contradicts Ms Bortei’s claim that she sustained a dislocation during the assault.
Two weeks ago, an incident, captured in a viral video showing relatives of a patient clashing with staff at Ridge Hospital’s emergency department, sparked widespread outrage and renewed concerns over the safety of healthcare workers.
In response to the public outcry, the Health Minister ordered the formation of the investigative committee, a move that received backing from professional bodies and the general public.
Meanwhile, Ms Bortei has filed a civil suit against social media personality Ralph Saint Williams, popularly known as Ralph De Fellow Ghanaian.
She is seeking GH¢7 million in damages for alleged physical assault and defamation connected to the incident.
