Paul Afoko, a member of the National Council of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), has confirmed he will be vying for National Chairmanship of the party when it goes to congress in March next year. Speaking on Joy News, the businessman says he wants to invigorate the party into an election-winning machine irrespective of who becomes flagbearer come 2016. Paul Afoko, a one-time staunch supporter of NPP’s former flagbearer aspirant, Alan Kyerematen says he is not contesting for the position with "pre-conceived ideas" to push any particular aspirant as the party's flagbearer. He insisted that "there is no grand plot to use position in the party to bring Alan Kyerematen back, No." He described himself as a "party animal" who is interested in working for the party. He traced his roots to the UP tradition maintaining he is not political creature of anybody. He said despite supporting Alan Kyerematen twice during flagbearer contests, he worked even harder to get Nana Akufo-Addo elected after he became the party's flagbearer. He said any association with Alan is the work of those he described as "merchants of division who thrive on division in the party and those who profit from trying to show there are divisions in the party." The Upper East Regional representative on the Council stated that in the scheme of things, a decisive number of delegates who will decide who becomes flagbearer for 2016 would have been chosen by the time anybody becomes a National Chairman. Coming up against the incumbent, Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey when the NPP goes to congress in March next year, Afoko said although the current executives have contributed their quota to build the party, it was important that others like him to assume leadership positions to improve on the work that had been done. Paul Afoko revealed that he has been harbouring a personal political plot which is to get the NPP back into power.
