Former Minister for Roads and Highways and Member of Parliament for Bantama, Francis Asenso-Boakye, has dismissed claims by President John Dramani Mahama regarding the financing of the Ofankor–Nsawam Road Project, insisting that the facts are clearly outlined in the Ministry’s handing-over notes.
During a visit to the project site on Wednesday, September 3, President Mahama alleged that government had secured a loan intended to fully finance the project and questioned why the works remained incomplete.
Responding in a statement on his Facebook page, Mr Asenso-Boakye clarified that the rehabilitation of the 33-kilometre dual carriageway was awarded at a contract sum of $346.4 million.
He explained that government secured $200 million from Afreximbank as partial funding, with the balance expected to come from budgetary allocations.
“It is misleading for the President to suggest that the Afreximbank loan was exhausted while the road remains incomplete. The handing-over notes clearly state that the facility represented only part of the financing arrangement,” he stated.
Mr Asenso-Boakye urged the former President to consult the official records before making such remarks, cautioning that misrepresenting facts for political advantage undermines public trust in infrastructure delivery.
He further appealed to Ghanaians to disregard what he described as “political distortions” and instead support transparency and steady progress on national projects.
“This is not the time for politics with infrastructure. It is a time for truth, accountability, and commitment to Ghana’s development,” he concluded.
