The Director of the Faculty of Academic Affairs and Research at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC), Prof Kwesi Aning, has condemned the comments made by the Director General of Operations for the Ghana Police Service, COP George Alex Mensah.

This is against the backdrop of COP Alex Mensah accusing the current IGP of not running the service properly.

The Police Commissioner, who's due for retirement this year, had appeared before an ad-hoc committee of parliament to respond to allegations captured in a leaked tape that he was supposedly part of a plot to remove the IGP from office.

According to COP Alex Mensah, serving officers are unhappy with the IGP, adding that any independent investigation will affirm this claim.

“It is true; the current IGP is not managing the service well. And I will not deny this today or tomorrow. I will say it everywhere I go. You can do your own investigation within the service and you will know.”

Speaking on Joy FM’s Top Story on Thursday, Prof Aning said it is problematic to sow seeds of disaffection against the IGP and make a claim that he's not liked.

He was more worried that such commentary was coming from a senior police officer who's aware of the service's complaint channels but fails to use them but instead chooses to do so on political lines.

“That demonstrates in no uncertain terms from where I sit, that he doesn’t mean well for the service.”

According to him, the COP Mensah, who's also a lawyer and a Chartered Accountant, has also “translated his personal antagonisms towards the IGP and wants to go down with him.”

He further described the situation as unfortunate.

In the wake of claims about his involvement in an alleged plot to cause the removal of the IGP from office, COP Mensah has stated that there’s no bad blood between him and the IGP.

According to him, he has no personal scores to settle with the IGP except professional disagreements.

“Mr Chairman, as I sit here, I don’t have any bad blood but what I do is I speak my mind whether you like it or not.

“If you are the boss and you do what I don’t like, I tell you. You can decide to hate me for that, that is your matter,” he said.

While admitting the voice on the tape is his, he claimed the content has been doctored, and also said the former New Patriotic Party Northern Regional Chairman, Bugri Naabu, told lies before the committee.

He denied claims that there was a plot to remove the IGP.
