Prominent South African politician, Julius Malema is attributing Ghana’s economic crisis to corrupt government officials.
According to him, those in authority have consistently misappropriated funds which has resulted in a few individuals in the hierarchy of wealth impoverishing the rest of the nation.
He explained that corrupt practices have made it difficult for Ghana to honour its external debts, contributing to indirect colonialism, a situation that Dr Kwame Nkrumah worked to avoid.
Speaking at A Day of Dialogue With Julius Malema, held on January 23, 2024, he said corruption has put the country’s democracy under threat.
“The democracy of Ghana is threatened by corruption - a corruption that made sure that Ghana does not pay its international debt. As a result, Ghana is unable to self-determine because everything else is dictated to Ghana by IMF and the World Bank because the current leadership failed to honour their obligation.”
“Corruption is a threat to a wonderful democracy anywhere because it is eating on the moral fibre of democratic dispensation,” he said.
Meanwhile, he advised the youth not to celebrate people who are known to have been involved in corrupt practices.
“We must never, ever celebrate anyone who is corrupt or seek to defend the corrupt individuals irrespective of our political affiliation," he added.
Mr Malema explained that those stealing from the public purse are stealing from the future, which is why they are unable to pay Ghana's debt.
He argued that even in the future they will not be able to pay the debt, stressing that the youth might inherit these debts which will make it difficult for them to develop the nation.
