Constituency Executives of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) from all 23 districts in the Central region have staged a demonstration against the party’s Chairman there.
The Executives have accused Robert Kutin of masterminding the suspension of the Regional Vice Chairman of the party, Ekow Ewusi.
Mr Ewusi was suspended on Monday by the Chairman after he refused to respond to a petition by one Edward Okraku Adum who accused him of engaging in criminal acts including drug peddling.
He was also accused of escaping from prison in the UK as well as illegally auctioning seized excavators from mining sites.
The Regional Vice Chairman is said to have asked the Chairman to produce the said petitioner to authenticate his claim before he responds to the claims which he agreed to do within a week.
He, however, did not fulfil his side of the agreement, leaving the party’s regional executives displeased.
They then suspended Mr Ewusi indefinitely and referred him to the Regional Disciplinary Committee of the party to further probe the matter.
At a press conference held after the demonstration, the upset executives called on their national leaders to ensure the reinstatement of the Vice-Chairman.
They questioned why the Regional Chairman took the decision to suspend Mr Ewusi when he had no right to do so.
“Why does he take action on something he is not been entrusted to do? We ask whether it is a case of personal interest on the part of the regional chairman. If not, then we are more challenged to question the authority and power under which the Regional Chairman exercised to suspend his Vice-Chairman.
“Article 11 clauses 4 and 5 of our party constitution clearly spells out the procedures for removing an elected member. It is important to state that nowhere in the constitution is a regional chairman empowered to suspend a colleague regional executive member without recourse to disciplinary procedures of the party,” the Executives said in a statement.
They vowed to leave no stone unturned in their quest to seek true justice for Mr Ewusi.
The Executives charged the Vice-Chairman not to be discouraged but continue to play his crucial role in the party to secure victory for the NPP in the 2020 elections.
