The Daily Guide newspaper has come under scathing attack for publishing pictures of an American paedophile in oral sex with some Ghanaian children. The September 10, 2009 edition of the paper headlined “Ghanaian kids suck white penis for food, movies,” saw pictures of a nude Patrick Ken Larbah 65, engaging in the illegal act with children whose eyes had only been covered, in what appears to be a not too successful attempt to conceal their identities. Critics have condemned the publication describing it as breach of journalistic ethics. Mrs Audrey Gadzekpo, Lecturer at the School of Communication Studies, Legon says “no self respecting paper will carry images like that” on its pages. She said such a publication in any part of the world could be considered as a “pornographic” material and wondered why the Daily Guide newspaper with trained journalists and respected politicians will engage in a thing like that. She described the publication as “vulgar and offensive” which recklessly violated the ethics of the profession. Mrs Gadzekpo said the headline of the story was even more nauseating, throwing caution to the wind, all in an attempt to make money out of the serious situation. “The headline is racist, it is vulgar and I am not going to repeat it here,” She told a Joy News reporter on Thursday, adding the image is exploitative of the children. "The use of the word white is racist, as if to say it is alright if it is a black man." The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), and the National Media Commission, the regulatory body have both condemned lucidly the publication. The Executive Secretary of the National Media Commission, George Sarpong who shared all the sentiments expressed by Gadzekpo said his outfit has been constrained to take action against some of these ethical breaches for fear of trampling on frontiers of democracy.
