President Akufo-Addo set up the “National Covid-19 Trust Fund” to mobilise resources towards the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.
Many Corporate Institutions and individuals have since then donated to the Fund to support the fight. Among such companies that has supported the fund and continue to do so is the Diamond Cement Group who has just fulfilled a 250 tonnes (5,000 bags) cement donation pledge to the fund to aid the construction of the Ga East Municipal Hospital.
The Group had earlier presented a cash cheque of GH₵100,000 to the Covid-19 National Trust Fund to support government’s effort in curbing the spread of coronavirus.
A top delegation from the Diamond Cement Group including the Chairman, Mr. Mukesh M. Patel, the Financial Controller, Mr. N. Venkatesh and the General Manager, Mr. B.V. K. Raju were present at the construction site of the Ga East Municipal Hospital to hand over the cement bags to the technical committee of the Covid-19 private sector fund. The delegation was accompanied by Rev. Dr. George Dawson-Ahmoah, The Executive Secretary of the Cement Manufacturers Association of Ghana (CMAG) who was on hand to lend support as Diamond Cement Group is a member of CMAG.
Handing over the bags, Mr. Mukesh M. Patel said the group saw the need to fulfil its pledge of cement bags considering how critical the country needs to invest in the healthcare infrastructure by building more hospitals.
He observed the Covid-19 had exposed the deficiencies in our healthcare systems and as such urged the private sector to come together to support Government’s pledge to construct hospitals in some 88 districts across the country.
Chairman of the technical committee of the Covid-19 private sector fund, Dr. Justice Yamson who received the donation on behalf of the fund thanked Diamond Cement Group for the continuous support and assured to put the donation to good use in ensuring the Ga East Municipal Hospital is completed on time. “The purpose of the hospital is to give Ghana its first properly built hospital fit for infectious diseases center and as such, any support from corporate Ghana to drive the course is a welcome news."
