As the nation still mourns some 14 people who perished in the Melcom shop disaster which occurred last Wednesday, November 7, 2012, another avoidable tragedy is sounding alarm bells at Kaneshie in Accra.
One of the two footbridges used by thousands of pedestrians to cross barbed wired Kaneshie/Mallam Highway is wobbling under rusty iron bolts and gapping holes.
Apart from the danger this footbridge poses commuters, hundreds of petty traders sell under and within the precincts of the bridge and any disaster will have dire consequences.
The iron bars holding the bridge (the big bridge) reveals such a deplorable state even to the ordinary observer. The irons show clear signs of rot and rust.
The concrete floor of the bridge has developed such deep holes, it is scary.
The smaller bridge was in a similar state and had to be closed down for repair work to be undertaken.
If nothing is done about this bridge, it may just be a disaster waiting to happen.
