The Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has urged President John Mahama to fulfil his campaign promise by signing the controversial anti-gay bill into law.

This call comes in response to recent comments from the President, in which he suggested that a government-sponsored bill might be more effective than the current Private Member’s bill.

President Mahama explained that introducing a government-backed bill would allow for wider consultation and contribute to building a national consensus on the matter.

This statement was made during a meeting with religious leaders on Tuesday, 14 January, where he also discussed the need for revisions to school curricula to include teachings that reflect Ghanaian and African values, including moral and cultural education.

However, Mr Ahiagbah has expressed dissatisfaction with the President’s position, accusing him of stepping back from his earlier commitment to sign the LGBTQ+ Bill, a promise made during the 2024 election campaign.

In a Facebook post on Thursday, 16 January, he reminded the President of the pledge he made to Ghanaians, urging him to honour his word and approve the bill in its current form.

Mr. Ahiagbah emphasised the importance of the President keeping his promise, stating that elections have consequences.

He argued that Mahama should not try to backtrack on his commitment, as doing so would undermine the trust of the electorate.

“Sign the bill as you have pledged to Ghanaians,” he asserted in his post.
