Drivers Company of Ghana (DRIVECO), an organization set up to improve the working conditions of drivers in the country has started registering commercial drivers in the country to help improve their condition of service. According to the management, the Ghana Private Roads and Transport Union (GPRTU) has expressed interest in ensuring that the mass registration is made mandatory for its drivers in the country. Commercial drivers were therefore urged to register for free at any GPRTU office or any DRIVECO Ghana office across the country. Speaking at ceremony to outdoor the new Brilliance vehicles for commercial drivers in Accra, Mr. Wilberforce Essuman, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of DRIVECO Ghana said the new Brilliance salon being offered to the commercial drivers promises to be one of the vibrant social interventions that the country would be witnessing. According to him, although DRIVECO Ghana is just three years old in its field of operations, they have managed to alleviate poverty among some commercial drivers in the country. “It is undeniable fact that, most commercial drivers have driven for several decades yet they cannot place their figure on even a nut of a vehicle. They drive peoples’ vehicles until they go on retirement with nothing to show in their hands,” he said. The CEO who said his vision was to upgrade commercial drivers in the country hinted that DRIVECO Ghana has instituted a policy to ensure that every driver in the country could own a car of his own. The policy dubbed “Vehicle For Work and Pay” according to him, would ensure that drivers operating under his out fit would be provided with vehicles on work and pay basis adding that the drivers would pay for the vehicles through an agreed period. Mr. Essuman, continued that DRIVECO through its policy for better conditions for drivers has also introduced a “None Working Allowance” for drivers who loses their vehicle through sale or damage. “This allowance will be paid if DRIVECO Ghana cannot provide the said driver with job, but the driver must be a consistent contributor for more then 6 months,” the CEO said. He announced that DRIVECO would collaborate with the National Drivers’ Academy to train drivers periodically to enable them update their knowledge and skills. Meanwhile, Mr Essuman told Myjoyonline.com that plans are far advanced to register all DRIVECO drivers under the National Health Insurance Scheme, in addition to an educational scholarship to their wards up to the second cycle level. A representative from the Transport Ministry thanked DRIVECO Ghana for such a gesture and promised that government would do all they could to help the private sector.
