Drivers in Accra have increased transport fares in response to recent fuel price hikes despite GPRTU and the Transport Coordinating Council's directive not to do so.A secular signed by the Chairman of Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (TCC), Ben Amoah Peprah and chairman of GPRTU, Alhaji Yaw Manu, indicates that although the increased prices of the petroleum products would obviously affect the running of their business, they must hold on with transport fee increases immediately. But some commercial drivers who spoke to Joy News say despite the GPRTU and the Transport Coordinating Council's directive and stiff opposition by passengers they will not rescind their decision. The drivers say if they don't increase the fares, they would be operating at a loss. The price of major petroleum products at the pumps have been increased by between 1% and 6%.The price of premium petrol has been increased by 1.71%, gas oil or diesel by 1.27% and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) by 6.18%.The price changes have been in accordance with government's resolve not to interfere with the National Petroleum Authority (NPA)’s bi-monthly review of prices of petroleum products.Government has decided to stop subsidising petroleum products.
