The Ghana Refugee Board has officially closed down the Eagle Star Refugee Camp in Elubo.
The closure of the facility follows security concerns over the closeness of the camp to the Ghana-Cote'd Ivoire border.
The camp came to prominence when some ex-Ivoirian combatants fled there in an attempt to avoid temporary relocation to the Ankaful Prison.
The Chairman of the Ghana Refugee Board, Ken Dzirasah told Joy News that the camp has been closed down and that some of the ex-combatants who fled are now cooperating with the authorities.
Most of the refuges, including 170 ex-combatants left the camp last month following rumours their movement would be restricted.
Mr. Dzirasah said the news that the ex-combants had escaped from the camp was inaccurate since the ex-combatants were never in confinement at the said camp.
He told Joy News that some of the refugees had initially misunderstood the re-location process, adding that some of them are now cooperating with the Board though he admitted the cooperation was not the best.
He further stated that the board is aware of the whereabouts of all the refugees who left the camp unceremoniously but said that what is going on now is a voluntary relocation exercise.
Mr. Dzirasah was quick to add that should the refugees fail to take advantage of this opportunity the board would have no choice than to apply force in taking them Ankaful Prisons.
The Chairman of the Refugee Board said plans are in place to build a permanent internment for the refugees in the Bono Ahafo region.
