The Civic Forum Initiative, a coalition of civil society groups is warning the 2012 elections could be in danger unless the Electoral Commission takes steps to address concerns raised about the biometric voters registration system.
Addressing journalists in Accra, the group said the concerns expressed by some political parties have created doubts about the credibility of the EC to conduct free and fair elections.
Spokesperson of the group, Emmanuel Bombande, who is the Executive Director of the West African Network for Peace building, said the call for verification in the biometric registration process should not be dismissed.
The opposition New Patriotic Party has led the crusade in raising the alarm over what it claims are flaws inherent in the yet-to-begin biometric registration process
Its chairman, Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey cited low camera pixels the EC intends to use in taking pictures for the registration process - something he noted was not internationally accepted.
The People’s National Convention is also advocating a return to the old system if the implementation of the new biometric process would prove problematic.
Mr Bombande stated on Wednesday that the Electoral Commission must take immediate steps to resolve the legitimate issues being raised by the political parties.
He also implored the Chief Justice to, as a matter of urgency, deal with all election-related matters.
Bombande said the International Community is looking up to Ghana to uphold its high standards in elections and the country must not disappoint.
He pointed out that a credible, free and fair election must be a collective responsibility for all and all citizens must assiduously towards it.
In a reaction, the Head of Public Affairs at the Electoral Commission, Christian Owusu Parry hinted his outfit will soon call an Inter-Party Advisory Committee meeting for party representatives to build consensus with all stake holders.
He assured the Commission would not renege on its responsibility to conducting a peaceful, free and fair election.
He said the Commission has duly noted the concerns being raised by the political parties and other key stakeholders and will do well to take those concerns on board.
