The ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE) is proud to announce the inauguration of solarisation projects at three hospitals in Ghana.

The solarisation projects consist of a 61KWp at Finney Hospital, a 21KWp solar system at Barnor Memorial Hospital, and a 30KWp solar power system at Mother-Love Hospital.

The projects were developed and implemented in partnership with Tradeworks Limited, a local solar energy company, with technical support and co-funding from ECREEE, through the ECOWAS Special Intervention Fund (ESIF).

The projects will ensure an uninterrupted power supply to the beneficiary hospitals and thus contribute to the provision of excellent healthcare services to the communities where they operate.

The inauguration ceremony at Finney Hospital was attended by several notable figures, including the Director for Renewable Energy, Randy Sey, who represented the Energy Minister of Ghana; the Director for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency at the Energy Commission of Ghana, Kofi Agyarko, who represented the Executive Secretary; Executive Director of ECREEE, Jean Francis Sempore; the Chief Medical Director of Finney Hospital, Dr. Allen Steele-Dadzie; and the Chief Executive Officer of Tradeworks Limited, Randy Sey.

In his remarks, the Director for Renewable Energy at the Ministry of Energy, highlighted the significance of the project, noting that the projects are in line with the Ghana Government’s policy to promote the adoption and utilisation of renewable energy and encourage all healthcare facilities accredited to the National Health Insurance Scheme to take full advantage of the benefits of solarisation, including the Net Metering Policy of the Government of Ghana.

The Director for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency at the Energy Commission of Ghana, in his remarks, noted that the Energy Commission, as the Focal Institution of Ghana for ECREEE, has been working closely with ECREEE and the ECOWAS Commission to promote sustainable energy in Ghana and the ECOWAS region.

He, therefore, expressed delight with the collaboration, noting that the solarization of hospitals project will ensure that there is constant power supply to critical areas of the facilities to improve upon service delivery.

The Chief Executive Officer of Tradeworks Limited expressed appreciation to the ECOWAS Commission, ECREEE, Energy Commission of Ghana, Ministry of Energy of Ghana, and all participating hospitals for making the installations possible.

He appealed to ECREEE to facilitate long-term concessionary funding to enable more hospitals and other end-users to access solar energy for their operations.

The Chief Medical Director of Finney Hospital noted that the solar energy installation ensures that their operations have reliable and cost-effective power, while lessening the burden on the national grid and reducing their carbon footprint.

The ECREEE Executive Director, Mr. Francis Sempore, noted that the projects represent a significant step towards providing sustainable energy and quality healthcare services to the communities.

He further stated that the projects are part of the ECOWAS efforts to further improve sustainable energy access to ECOWAS community citizens, which led to the establishment of a special energy intervention fund that is being implemented by ECREEE.

These projects mark a significant step forward in enhancing the quality of healthcare services in the region.

By providing an uninterrupted power supply through these solar systems, the project ensures that medical facilities can operate efficiently without the disruptions caused by power outages.
