As we celebrate the birthday of the first President of Ghana, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, many Ghanaians would be wondering why of all places, Ghana is the place where the Busia-Danquah tradition chose to rear its ugly head. This is because it goes without saying that this political tradition is the destructive tool in Ghana’s body politics since independence. The NDC, which is having a running battle with the Busia-Danquahist, represented by the NPP today, did not exit during the pre- and post-independent eras in Ghana and therefore cannot be blamed for political party violence then. The CPP was the party that existed and the agony its members went through at the hands of the Busia-Danquahist has been a subject of study for students of history over the years. From bomb throwing through assassination attempts to burying people alive, the Busia-Danquahist showed, during the pre and post independent eras that they are a party that suffers from superiority complex. Though they claim to be the champions of democracy and its guarantee of human rights, they believe that it is their divine right to rule; no one else is fit to do so. Thus, they would even dine with the devil to capture political power. According to Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, “they have a long record of go-slow policies, of subversive activity and of alignment with imperialist and their agent” What the CPP suffered at the hands of the Busia-Danquahist in the 50s and 60s, the NDC is suffering today from the same Busia-Danquahists. Is the common denominator to political party violence in Ghana since independence not the Busia-Danquahists? Indeed, Ghana would have been a better place if the country never had political parties such as NLM,UP,PP,PFP or NPP which are all of the Busia-Danquahist tradition. As things stand now, Ghanaians can only pray and hope that as the years go by, members of this tradition will shed of their intolerant nature and their quick resort to violence and murder to capture political power.
