Several schools in the Banda Ahenkro district are still without effective tuition eight days after letters of threats of xenophobic attacks on non-indigenes working in the district.

Letters from an unknown group calling itself 'Concerned members of Banda Ahenkro' caused fear and panic among non-native teachers of the town as the letter asks them to leave with immediate effect because their safety was not guaranteed. 

The letters were found on the school premises in the early hours of Monday, March 13, 2017.

A portion of one of the letters stated that job opportunities in the district are being taken over by non-residents rendering the majority of the youth in the district jobless.

It further accused non-indigenes of interfering with the election of the Member of Parliament (MP) there. 

Assistant headmaster of the Banda Ahenkro RC junior high school (JHS), Mr. Osei Robert, disclosed that "out of the 10 teachers of the school, only two are currently in the community."

This, he added is negatively affecting teaching and learning as the two are unable to handle the entire school at the moment.

He explained that the regional directorate of the Ghana Education Service (GES) has assured them that steps are being taken to get all staff who are currently out of town to return within the shortest possible time.

He called on his colleague teachers to return to post as "opinion leaders in the community are taking the necessary steps to provide them with the needed security to continue with their services to the nation".

He was quick to debunk the assertion that non-residents are preventing indigenes from working in the area, adding "the district is not responsible for the transfer of teachers to the community. Other qualified natives of the land are equally posted to other districts to work."

Joy News' visit to the Banda Ahenkro Presby revealed the same situation as the Banda Ahenkro RC JHS where the headmaster also bemoaned the effect of the threats to the school.
