The third round of the 2016/17 EFL Cup was completed on Wednesday night.
Manchester United arrested a three-game losing streak by eventually getting over League One Northampton Town 3-1 at Sixfields Stadium thanks to a cracking goal from Michael Carrick as well as second-half strikes from Ander Herrera and Marcus Rashford.
The win sets up a tantalising fourth round clash between United and crosstown rivals Manchester City after Pep Guardiola's side defeated Swansea City 2-1 at the Liberty Stadium.
Gael Clichy was the unlikely opening goalscorer before 19-year-old Aleix Garcia netted his first goal for City prior to Gylfi Sigurdsson's late consolation.
Tottenham Hotspur powered past Gillingham 5-0 to set up a fourth round clash with Liverpool courtesy of a brace from Christian Eriksen and second-half goals from Vincent Janssen, Josh Onomah and Erik Lamela.
A double from Paddy McNair saw Sunderland get past Queens Park Rangers after falling behind with a 2-1 result at Loftus Road while Dimitri Payet's injury-time free-kick spared West Ham United's blushes as they edged League Two Accrington Stanley 1-0.
Southampton scored goals either side of half-time with Charlie Austin netting for the third match running and Jake Hesketh contributing his first senior goal to beat Crystal Palace 2-0 at St Mary's as Hull City overcame Stoke City 2-1 courtesy of an injury-time winner from summer signing Markus Henriksen.
And in a nail-biter, Chelsea loanee Tammy Abraham was once again Bristol City's hero with a late winner to give the Robins a a memorable 2-1 victory over Fulham who scored first through Abraham's Blues colleague Lucas Piazon and also missed a penalty through Cauley Woodrow.
The fourth round of the league cup will take place in the week commencing October 24. A highlight of the draw is the pairing of Manchester City and Manchester United. Click here to see the full fixtures.
