President of the Catholic Bishop Conference has said that Akufo-Addo’s directive for a public inquiry into the clash between Military personnel and the agitating youth at Ejura, cannot solve the problem.
According to Most Reverend Philp Naameh, it is high time miscreants are dealt with to prevent such abominable acts from recurring.
When asked on JoyFM's News Night, for his view on the directive by the President, he said, “this is not the way to go because we are used to such kind of directives which do not yield to anything, we need a kind of sanction or punishment which will intimidate and be a lesson to all others, but to make a loose directive isn’t enough".
He added that the National Security Ministry's failure to speak on the matter is inappropriate, "as people are saying if soldiers are brought in to act so unprofessionally, we lose trust, we just lose trust in the ability of our own security to protect us and I think that is what is very worrying for all of us".
The Bishop concluded that the National Security Minister should make his position known to the public regarding the clash at Ejura.
"We are expecting the National Security to make a statement to really condemn the unprofessional behavior of those soldiers as we have stated in our statement who took a posture of aiming, actually shooting and killing innocent civilians, I think this is not anything we expect from our army.
"We expect that soldiers who misbehave should be brought to book, we don’t anything actually less than dismissing soldiers who so behave. That is the punishment we are expecting but not just any kind of punishment but dismissing them from the security forces because that wasn’t what they were trained to do," he stated.
On Monday, June 28, social activist, Ibrahim Mohammed known as Kaaka was pronounced dead at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital after an attack against him on Saturday.
Following his demise, the youth of Ejura hit the streets on Tuesday to demand justice and accountability. But the protest turned turbulent after the peeved protestors clashed with Military personnel.
Two persons were shot dead while four others suffered various injuries. The deceased are; Abdul Nasir Yussif, 25, and Muntala Mohammed, 26.
In view of this, President Akufo-Addo in a press statement today called on the Minister for the Interior, Ambrose Dery, to conduct a public inquiry into the circumstances that led to the death of two persons in Ejura on Tuesday, June 29.
Akufo-Addo indicated that the Minister has ten days to provide a detailed report of the inquiry.
“The Interior Minister is to provide a detailed report from the inquiry, with recommendations for appropriate action to be taken by July 9, 2021”, parts of the statement read.
