Dr. Sekou Nkrumah has said that the defeat of opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Nana Akufo-Addo in the just-ended presidential elections marks the end of the politician’s presidential ambitions.
The son of Ghana’s first President told XYZ News that Mr. Akufo-Addo’s age will make him unsuitable for candidature in the 2016 elections.
“I think the Presidential ambition of Nana Addo has just gone out of the window by this defeat. In life I think it is not everything that you can achieve and life has a way of humbling people,” Dr. Nkrumah said.
He added that the “NPP will definitely have to change their leadership; I can’t see Nana Akufo-Addo leading the NPP in 2016.”
Akufo Addo will be 72 years-old by 2016.
Dr. Nkrumah also said that Nana Akufo Addo’s loss paves the way for former Trades Minister John Alan Kojo Kyeremanteng to take the mantle of NPP leadership, calling Kyeremanteng a more likeable candidate than Akufo-Addo.
“Alan Kyeremanteng looks like he is now very well positioned to take over the leadership of the NPP…I think talking about personality and all that, he seems to be favourable to many people in terms of the way he carries himself.”
Meanwhile, Dr. Nkrumah believes that President Mahama and the incumbent NDC won the elections because of the candidate’s ethnic background.
“If John Mahama was not a Northener, NDC would have lost the 2012 elections,” he said.
